A university project to target plastic waste.
Loom primarily focusses on black plastic waste - the carbon pigment used to give plastic its black tint means that infrared sorting systems in recycling plants cannot recognise it due to the light being completely absorbed.
Using Thermochromic science to create an alternative pigment to carbon dyes.
Using thermochromic technology, the alternative pigment that would ultimately replace the current carbon pigment, is heat activated meaning when it is exposed to a certain degree of heat, the colour of the pigment changes. But why wouldn't we just make the packaging or product a different colour?
One of the main reasons black plastic exists in todays global economy (predominantly food and drink products) is simply because it looks good. Rather than running far away from this, i was inspired by it and used it as the grounds of all ideas. Ironically, i never wanted black plastic to leave, but I knew there just had to be another way - something truly innovative
and creative.
